Rockford Little League

The Intermediate (50/70) Baseball Division was introduced in January, 2010, as a pilot program for 12- and 13-year olds which utilizes a 50-foot pitching distance and 70-foot base paths.  The division, which was a new division of Little League Baseball in 2013 for players league age 11-13 with post season tournament opportunities, including a World Series, offers a transition for players between the standard Little League sized field (46/60) and the Junior/Senior sized field (60’6″/90).

Did you know that the Intermediate Division (50/70) baseball is as much about expanded rules as it is about expanded field dimensions? However, it is the expanded baseball rules in this division that take the players to the next level of competition.

The expanded rules that allow for faster and more dynamic play include:

  • Lead offs and pick offs allowed
  • When balks are called, all base runners advance
  • Pitchers are allowed 95 pitches per day
  • A standard game is 7 innings
  • Double headers are permitted
  • The on deck position is utilized
  • Once a pitcher is removed from the mound, as long as the pitcher remains in the game at a different position, the pitcher may return to the mound as a pitcher later in the game
This division has its own dedicated All-Stars post season which culminates at a World Series currently played in California.

Typically, competitive 11 and 12 year olds will stay in our Majors Division, and Intermediates are 13 year olds (DOB 9/1/07-8/31/08).  However, if a competitive 11/12  year old wanted extra baseball, we would offer dual enrollment, so they could play both Majors and Intermediates.  Contact us at [email protected] if you are interested in this option.

Unlike the younger levels of Little League, Intermediate games will be home and away.  We play both Rockford teams and other Intermediate teams around the Grand Rapids area.

As always, the best part about Little League is that it is community based. Kids can still play with and against their school friends, and home games are at East Rockford Middle School, so it helps keep things simpler for families who have multiple kids playing Little League.
